When buying items online, physical product dimensions can help shoppers to understand the exact size of an item. They can inform shipping box size and cost calculations. And when it comes to online advertising, they can serve a third purpose: determining the relative size of products placed in display ads.
Physical products are photographed and then product images are typically stored at a resolution of 3000 x 3000 pixels. Thus, most product images have the same image resolution, regardless of their physical product size. That’s good news for consistency of digital product images, but makes things extremely challenging when using those product images together for display ads. For example, if two product images are both 3000 x 3000 pixels in resolution, but the physical items are much different in size, then simply resizing the images and placing them next to each other won’t product the correct results. The products will be sized disproportionately relative to each other.
Fortunately, when sizing products for display ads, using physical product dimensions along with the digital product images makes things much easier! Simply load the physical product dimensions into RapidAds, and the system will automatically use those dimensions when sizing your products.
The Correct Way to Write Product Dimensions
The correct way to write product dimensions is normally Length x Width x Height, LxWxH. For example, when Amazon shows product dimensions on the product page, these are typically written on Amazon as Length x Width x Height. Using this standardized approach helps ensure consistency across all your products, and consistency with what shoppers expect on Amazon and other sites as well.
Common Product Dimension Issues
Two common issues with product dimensions are getting the dimensions in the wrong order and having incorrect dimensions. Let’s take those one at a time. First, sometimes dimensions are in the wrong order, swapping the length and width values or the width and height values, for example. In another case, the dimensions themselves can be incorrect. This happens for a variety of reasons, but one of the most common reasons is using the pack size for the individual item size. The pack size is typically much larger than the individual item sizes, so it’s possible to end up with dimensions measuring, say, 70 inches by 40 inches, when the dimensions should really be say 5 inches by 10 inches.
Regardless of the reason for the error, issues with dimensions can often be detecting by spot checking the data for a given brand. Fortunately, RapidAds has a number of built-in detection rules that flag potentially incorrect dimensions for further review. Once these are identified, they can be quickly corrected so that you can continue using the product images for creating display ads. And if no dimensions data is readily available for a product, or the dimensions data is incorrect, RapidAds will still generate the display ad, with the correct text, font, text positioning, background color/image and product images. That means you’re already most of the way there and can quickly adjust the product images as needed.
The good news is that in most cases, image dimensions are correct and readily available. That means you can create fully customer-ready ads with the click of a button!
